AVAST YE! (See how i worked that in right away) The Winds of Fate are blowing, and fortune favors the bold. There is treasure out there waiting to be plundered, and coffers to be filled. It just takes a Captain with the will and strength to grab it. The seas are full of dangerous monsters and rival Pirate Captains, but this moment is yours not theirs. Your sails are full, your ships are ready, and your sword is sharp. Time to sail the seas, and make your name!
Players take turns trying to get to seven gold by rolling dice. If you can roll at least three coins on your dice roll, you can earn one gold token and end your turn. Roll six gold coins and get two gold coins (AKA Davy Jones Yahtzee). Other symbols allow you to re-roll the die, hand dice to your opponents to roll which can turn out good or bad for you or plundering (plunder, plunder, lightning and the plunder). Above all else, you don't want to roll the Kraken; it's terrible times. They do not go away when you roll them, and if you roll three of them (or if you wind up with three of them as a kind gift from your opponents), your turn ends (awful times).
This game is very small and portable. It's the size of a mint tin so it's something you can just throw in your pocket and take anywhere which is a plus. That being said there is a lot of game in this small tin. If you are familiar with Thing 12 games previous release dice of crowns you know what sets there games apart from other games in the roll & score genre (zombie dice, martian dice, pass the pig) it's the interaction between players. Most games like this you are just waiting for your turn to happen. In this game when your opponent rolls a ship, the rest of the table can be involved in their turn. And depending on what gets rolled with that die there are several decisions to be made. And the addition of the plunder phase where you face off versus an opponent in a battle for gold, and the advanced rules for the mercenary pirate ship make the theme fit perfectly. A deep filler game with lots of interaction. Dice of pirates is a great addition to anyone's collection.
