Welcome to Gloomhalden!
My intention and goal for this series is to give an overview of the world that is included in Gloomhaven’s box, not a deep review or detailed session reports but stories from the road. I don’t intend for this to be a tutorial for you to learn every little mechanic and explain every rule (I will miss and break many myself) but I want to give you a taste of what it is like as we wind our way through Gloomhaven scenario by scenario.
So firstly let’s take a minute to take an overview of what we are getting into. Gloomhaven is the brain child of designer Isaac Childres, It comes in a giant box that weighs in at 20 lbs. The game is a cooperative campaign where we will play the role of fantasy heroes killing monsters and claiming gold in a variety of scenarios. The system is an interesting hybrid of euro style card play, dungeon crawling battles, D&D style storytelling and character development, and legacy game elements. This combination and grandiose scope had all the potential of being a jumbled mess but what comes out of that box is a riveting and well-tuned game.
The contents took me over 3 hours to punch and sort into Plano boxes (thanks to BGG user RyanH for his YASS system) which is crucial! Whether you use this system, or sort with baggies, or buy a laser cut solution I HIGHLY recommend a good storage solution to aid setup and tear down. This may sound overwhelming but once all the grunt work was done learning and teaching the game system was fairly painless and the well organized rule book makes looking up rules and symbols pretty simple.
Now let me introduce the players…
We are The Committee, a group of gamers of varying experience and varying ability who will be assuming the roles of mercenaries seeking fame, fortune, and glory.
Han the scoundrel hasn’t seen a room full of monsters she wouldn’t charge into and start throwing knives.
Korg the Cragheart our jack of all trades comfortable in the front lines and hanging back bailing out his partners.
Vyl the Mindthief damage dealing and rat summoning is his game.
Leroy the Tinkerer the brains and main support of the group, calling plays and healing us up.
This gang of misfits will venture forth to explore what this box of goodies is offering and will do so with laughter, curiosity, and the occasional rules flub. So join us as we explore Gloomhaven.
