Now before i get into this interview i want to tell you two things. The first is that i have know Mike my whole adult life. We have been friends twenty plus years. The second thing is that when you hear about the number of character cards he has and what he has done i want you to understand that the man has had this game only about 6 months. He had ZERO amount of this game before i gave him the starter set he talks about. Trust me, it will have more impact if you know this up front.
How long have you been playing champions of the Galaxy?
I started playing almost 30 years ago. I saw it in a PWI mag and was drawn right to it. It combined Pro Wrestling and Super Heroes, which were two of my favorite things at the time.
I played for about ten years and eventually started to drift away, mostly out of being busy with other stuff. Last April one of my best friends Jim Freeman (you may know him), brought me the original set redone in color. I had no idea that the game was still around. I played it with the kids and was instantly hooked again.
You have a work station for champions in your house?
I have a section in my basement set up for card storage / creation. Printer, laptop, lamination machine and paper cutters. Heavy card stock paper, laminate sheets, hard plastic sleeves, etc.
Since you have picked back up, about how many cards (wrestlers) do you have?
This is a tough one. I’d say at least 700. I have purchased every CoTG character, ROH, EVOLVE, CWFH, Legends sets, so there complete. Also tons and tons of bootlegs.
How many leagues are you currently running?
GWF [Galactic & Universal) (like Smackdown & Raw)], FTR (NXT type fed), ACE, CPC, NDW are just the fantasy ones. I also run ROH, Legends, CWFH, CZW, EVOLVE, Chikara and some women’s feds too.
And each of them have champions? how many belts are we talking between all the leagues?
For the real feds, I use every real title that the company has. For the fantasy feds I have around the same amount. In total, I’d say around 70.
70? Man, I'm surprised your wife even still talks to me after being the spark that ignited this. How do you keep track of the charts you need?
Instead of pulling all the game charts needed to play the game (think stratomatic), I printed out all the charts and put them on one board. I made one that’s 2 sided (one having Battle Royals & the other 3 or 4 Way Dance charts. The other is more for 2 players.
Which card is your favorite?
One of the members of the community had some Legends cards made up. His Ric Flair cards are my favorite cards I own. Perfectly made and it’s the Natch.
What about this game made you become such a superfan?
I mentioned the Wrestling/Super hero thing earlier, but I always loved booking wrestling matches, cards, feuds, etc. I would play with my toy wrestlers for hours at a time and I would keep the stats and title histories, have interviews and feuds. Same with sports video games and Wrestling ones. Top 10’s, Wrestler of the Month, Most Rushing yards in a game, best free throw percentage. It was in “The Book” as my friends called it. Also the collectible aspect of the game reminds my of buying sports cards or comics or Pokémon. I like that you can play co op or solo as well.
